ANATOMY...THE BASIS of Medical College for MBBS. Ever wondered what the books of Anatomy have in it that makes the med school students scratch their brains and turn out their wits? Well here are few simple steps to help you really do well with the subject.
2 Now coming to major issues. The Gross Anatomy Well to get a good grip on the subject try and visualize the gross things. Make a mental picture of everything you study. e.g. If the book says there are 3 layers of muscles in the anterior compartment of forearm, imagine it in a 3-Dimensional space. Next, keep on adding to the picture by the text and the pictures in the atlas and the books.
3 Learn to dissect. Dissection....Never never never skip your gross anatomy dissection classes!!! It might get boring for few. But it was the best thing for me. It is the place where ANATOMY resides. You skip Dissection...Anatomy SKIPS YOU!!! When you are at dissection, try and study the cadaver. Try and relate what you have studied in the text book last night/week. Discuss with your friends the structure of the part.(highly essential)
4 Talk about it. Discussion...well after you have studied the text books and done the dissection on the cadaver...The next important step is the DISCUSSION among your friends. In a group of 2-3 (don't go for a crowd) try and discuss a particular topic. See what points you have missed and what you can add to the discussion. See what your friends are saying wrong and let them find fault in you. This is a great learning style.
5 TEACH... There are always people around who HATE anatomy and despise it. For them the very basic nature of anatomy being a BORE becomes the limiting factor. So here is the golden lining for you. Teach the weaker and the lesser ones. Let them know what anatomy is about. They may not like the subject, but they have to study it for passing the exams. They may not understand any of your words...like you spoke in Arabic or Chinese to them.. but what happens to you is important. You, in the course of teaching, are actually revising your matter and making your concepts more and more crystal clear.
6 Learn the skeletal system. BONES... Always have your own set of bones. Study the bones FIRST. You need to be through and through with the bones to know the insertion point and the attachment areas on the bones. Adding to my previous points...study bones with a friend. Your friend may read out the description while you find the points on the bones.
7 READ ... You need to read your book 10 or more times through and through to get a hold on the matter. Well, I assure you once you start you will be reading more than 10 times for sure. The first reading will be hardest and will be time consuming. But the following ones will be faster and more productive. 4-5 readings will be done during your normal course of study. The next 2-3 readings will be prior to your pre-final exam. And another 2-3 readings will be prior to your FINAL exam. So you may very easily exceed 10 readings.
TIPS
- BOOK...ALWAYS STICK TO ONE BOOK. There may be hundreds of books on anatomy. One may be better than another. But I advise you to stick to one book only - that will be your base book. If you keep changing books, you will never complete your study of anatomy. Read ONE book and when you are done with one, read the others and add important points to your BASE book.
- Dictionary... Never be too lazy to open your dictionary. If you ever find a word that is unknown to you, Open the dictionary. Just write the meaning of the word in the text book next to the word itself. It is an amazing trick and helps you in a huge way. In the next reading, you will see the difference, I assure you.
- You need to read an anatomy book at least 3-4 times.
- Always try to study with another person in your class. Anatomy can be a tough subject to master. Having a friend will help you study faster and efficiently.
